Up to 10 inches of snow forecast for Northern Susitna Valley through Sunday afternoon

The National Weather Service forecasts 4 to 10 inches of snow for the Northern Susitna Valley, including Broad Pass, under a winter weather advisory in effect until 4 pm Sunday. The agency warns travel could be very difficult as snow continues north of Talkeetna and across Broad Pass.

The Anchorage office first issued the advisory early Saturday, calling for 4 to 12 inches starting at 1 pm that day. It lowered the top of that range to 10 inches in an update at 5:13 am Sunday.

Forecasters expect the heaviest snow Sunday morning before it tapers off. Near the south end of Broad Pass, snow may mix with rain or freezing rain at times, which would limit snow totals there, the advisory says.

The weather service's Anchorage forecast discussion put the chance at 70 to 80 percent that temperatures in the northern Susitna and Copper River valleys would hold between 29 and 34 degrees, a range that favors mostly snow rather than rain.

After a brief break, another round of snow is possible late Sunday evening into early Monday morning.

The same stretch drew an advisory earlier this month. On Oct. 19, the weather service forecast 2 to 4 more inches of steady snow along the Parks Highway from north of Talkeetna through Broad Pass, after an earlier advisory that day had forecast 4 to 8 inches of total accumulation for the same area.

The weather service asks drivers to slow down and use caution. For the latest road conditions, call 511 or visit 511.alaska.gov.
