Unalaska's council cleared the mayor to accept a Trident-hosted trip to a Navy commissioning

Unalaska's mayor may accept event tickets, two nights of lodging in Girdwood and ground transportation from Trident Seafoods Corporation for a trip to a Navy ceremony, the Unalaska City Council decided Tuesday.

The council passed Resolution 2026-60 on Sept. 22, authorizing Mayor Vincent M. Tutiakoff, Sr. to attend the commissioning of the destroyer USS Ted Stevens in Whittier on Oct. 3. Trident, which operates one of the largest seafood processing plants in Unalaska, invited the mayor as part of a group the company organized.

The council found that accepting those benefits does not create the appearance of undue influence barred by Unalaska Code § 2.88.045. The council also found that the trip serves a legitimate public purpose. The resolution authorizing the mayor's travel is available in the city's meeting record.

The city will pay $1,546 in airfare and $444 in per diem, a total of $1,990. Staff wrote that the travel was not included in the council's FY27 travel budget, which has $98,983.58 available.

The Navy has scheduled the ceremony for noon in Whittier.
