Dujuan remnants bring weekend rain to Southeast, gale warning near Cape Suckling

Southeast Alaska mariners and coastal communities face heavy swells and rounds of moderate to heavy rain this weekend as the remnants of Typhoon Dujuan drive multiple fronts into the Gulf from Friday night, with gale-force wind, over 34 knots, warned for one stretch of coast.

Friday is the break: dry, mostly sunny and seasonably cool.

A gale warning runs 1 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday for Icy Cape to Cape Suckling: east wind to 35 knots, gusts to 45, seas to 14 feet. Small craft advisories cover the rest of the outer coast, 10 p.m. Friday to 6 p.m. Saturday.

The NWS Juneau Area Forecast Discussion, a technical outlook written for forecasters, ties the pattern to Dujuan's remnants and an upper-level low or trough crossing southern interior Alaska into the Gulf. The first front reaches the panhandle late Friday night into Saturday, and a second pushes east on Sunday.

Heaviest rain is expected in the northern panhandle Sunday, the southern panhandle Monday. Forecasters put flooding risk lower, since the fronts stay progressive.

Isolated thunderstorms are possible along the Gulf Coast and southern panhandle as colder air aloft moves in, though confidence is low.
