Troopers report drugs found on inmate during intake at Fairbanks jail

Alaska State Troopers found drugs on an inmate during intake at the Fairbanks Correctional Facility on Wednesday, according to a dispatch report. Charges are being forwarded to the district attorney's office.

The dispatch, posted under case number AK26089286, says the item is being sent for testing and the investigation is ongoing. It does not identify the inmate or the suspected substance. Troopers note that any charges reported are accusations and defendants are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty.

Troopers investigated suspected drugs at the jail before. On Aug. 18, they sent a substance found there to the state crime lab. On May 27, an inmate brought in by Pretrial Services was found with methamphetamine.

The facility's 2014 prisoner handbook states the Department of Corrections takes a position of "Zero Tolerance" for controlled substances. It describes substance-abuse screening as a way to confirm unauthorized drug use.
