Three more Bethel properties head toward City Council nuisance abatement hearings
Bethel's Planning Commission has picked three more properties to send to the City Council for nuisance abatement hearings, according to the planning director's September report to City Manager Lori Strickler. Owners who ignore an abatement order risk a lien from the city.
The commission chose 1119 Naun Raq, 1111 Naun Raq and 1019 Ridgecrest Drive from eight candidates on Sept. 10. No hearing date has been set.
The city has struggled to reach anyone responsible for the three properties, according to the report. Both owners of record at 1019 Ridgecrest Drive have died, and the city hasn't found an estate or heir. Three letters sent to 1119 Naun Raq between April 2025 and March 2026 drew no response. At 1111 Naun Raq, the report lists "no progress made" as of this summer.
The council has already approved abatement for three other properties: 410 Owl Street, 17 Kwethluk Lane and 251 Akiak Drive.
The Planning Commission meets next at 6:30 pm Oct. 8 at City Hall and on Zoom. Its agenda includes nuisance properties and a vacant commission seat, and residents can submit written comments before the meeting.
