Subcontractor error on Bethel gym expansion forces panel replacement, delaying completion

Bethel's gym expansion will not finish on the schedule the City has been tracking. UIC identified an error in a subcontractor's installation of the roof and wall panels at the YK Community Center, Parks and Recreation Director Shane Iverson wrote in his August 2026 report. Crews will remove the panels, repurpose them where possible, and install new roof panels at no additional cost to the City.

The master construction schedule set substantial completion at Oct. 24, 2026, with testing and commissioning, final training, gym equipment installation and punch-list work built around that date. Final completion was set for Nov. 13. Iverson's report does not state a revised date. A separate City document lists a target completion date of Dec. 31, 2026.

The Community Parks and Recreation Committee is scheduled to take up a construction update Monday, Sept. 14, at 6 p.m. at 300 Chief Eddie Hoffman Highway. Written comment is due to [email protected] by 4 p.m. that day.
