State Department awards Anchorage's Koniag Professional Services $490,344 for inspector general hotline

The U.S. Department of State will pay $490,344 to Koniag Professional Services, LLC of Anchorage to staff executive and hotline support for its Office of Inspector General investigations unit. The one-year contract, award ID 19AQMM26F7201, runs Sept. 15, 2026, through Sept. 14, 2027, according to USAspending.gov.

The firm operates from 3800 Centerpoint Drive in Anchorage. It is an Alaska Native corporation-owned company tied to Koniag, Inc., the regional corporation for the Kodiak archipelago.

Federal records show other State Department inspector general work awarded to the company: $170,362 for OIG inspection support and $314,270 for a front office writer and editor, both beginning Sept. 30.

Alaska Native corporation contracting has drawn scrutiny for decades. Senate investigative staff in 2009 described concerns about waste, fraud and pass-through work. The Congressional Research Service in 2019 found both support for the model and longstanding criticism over competition and how benefits reach shareholders.

At a Commonwealth North panel in Anchorage on May 26, Kevin Berry said profits from such contracts flow back to Alaska through the corporations' headquarters, reaching shareholders through dividends and other benefits that extend to communities across the state.
