Spiridon Bay harvest area stays open as other Kodiak sections close Monday night

Commercial permit holders fishing Telrod Cove can keep fishing past Monday night, while sections of three Kodiak districts shut down at 9 p.m. Monday, Aug. 10; other sections gain a new 57-hour opening that runs through Wednesday. The Alaska Department of Fish and Game lists the Spiridon Bay Special Harvest Area as open until further notice, with no closure date attached.

Closing at 9 p.m. Monday are the Outer Karluk, Outer Ayakulik and Halibut Bay sections of the Southwest Kodiak District; the Central, North Cape, Inner Uganik and Uyak Bay sections of the Northwest Kodiak District; and the Southwest Afognak Section of the Afognak District. At the same time, Advisory Announcement No. 31 opens a 57-hour period from noon Monday, Aug. 10, to 9 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 12, covering sections within the Alitak, Eastside Kodiak, Northeast Kodiak and Afognak districts. The distinction appears in the department's Inseason Alaska Commercial Salmon Summary, last updated Friday, Aug. 7, and in Advisory Announcement No. 31, dated Sunday, Aug. 9.

Spiridon Bay has been open on those terms since the advisory opening at noon Saturday, June 27. The 2025 season summary put the harvest in the Spiridon Bay area and Spiridon Bay Section at about 41,021 sockeye, of which 30,567 fish, or 73%, were Kodiak Regional Aquaculture Association cost-recovery fish.

The department's standing prohibition on retaining Chinook 28 inches or greater in purse seine gear remains in effect. This account rests entirely on ADF&G's own notices; no fishermen's response appears in that material.
