Snow advisories end for Broad Pass and Paxson, with snow lingering into Monday
The National Weather Service's winter weather advisory for Broad Pass and the Northern Susitna Valley expired at 4 pm Sunday, and the agency said the threat of additional significant snow accumulation had ended.
Snow could keep falling in places into Monday morning. Web cameras Sunday still showed snow-covered roads north of Talkeetna and east into the Copper River Valley, along the Richardson Highway and along the Tok Highway north of Gulkana, the weather service said in its forecast discussion.
The advisory had called for 4 to 10 inches in the Northern Susitna Valley, including Broad Pass, down from as much as 12 inches in Saturday's forecast.
In the Northern Copper Valley, an advisory that called for 4 to 8 inches, with the most from Paxson north, expired at 10 pm Sunday. Snow remains possible near Paxson through Monday morning, but the weather service said it doesn't expect significant additional accumulation. Forecasters put the chance of more than an inch by late Monday morning at 15%. A second weak front could bring scattered snow showers Monday afternoon and evening, though forecasters don't expect widespread accumulation.
Around Talkeetna, the same front brought freezing rain Saturday evening. An advisory for the Central Susitna Valley warned of freezing rain, particularly along the Parks Highway near Talkeetna and the Talkeetna Spur Road, with up to two-tenths of an inch of ice. Forecasters canceled it at 5:13 am Sunday after temperatures across most of the valley rose above freezing.
Farther north on the Parks Highway, the weather service's Fairbanks office has an advisory for Nenana until 4 pm Monday, warning of up to an inch of snow and a glaze of ice, with precipitation changing to mostly rain overnight into Monday.
Earlier this month, the state transportation department urged drivers to stay off the Parks Highway between Talkeetna and Cantwell unless they had to travel, saying snow and ice had made it dangerous to drive.
