Sitka delays Lake Street reopening and Monastery Street 'Do Not Enter' signs
The City and Borough of Sitka has pushed back the reopening of Lake Street, which had been planned for Wednesday, Oct. 21. The road could reopen as soon as next week, weather permitting, the city said.
Recent weather and construction delays set back the schedule, and crews still have work to finish before the road can safely reopen, according to the city. It said it will release an updated timeline.
The delay also holds off the Monastery Street traffic change Alaska News reported Oct. 16. Once Lake Street reopens, the city plans to post "Do Not Enter" signs where Monastery meets Arrowhead Street and DeGroff Street, so drivers can no longer turn onto Monastery there. They will still be able to leave Monastery at those streets, and residents will reach the area from Hirst and Kinkead streets.
The city says the change will cut through traffic on Monastery by steering drivers to Lake Street. It is part of the Lake-Hirst and Monastery-Kinkead utility and street project.
