Magnitude 3.9 quake near Hope shakes 800-plus Southcentral Alaskans late Friday
A magnitude 3.9 earthquake shook Southcentral Alaska at 11:42 p.m. Friday, centered near the Kenai Peninsula community of Hope, the U.S. Geological Survey and the Alaska Earthquake Center reported.
The epicenter sat 1 kilometer west-southwest of Hope, about 23 miles south of Anchorage across Turnagain Arm. The quake struck 31.3 kilometers deep, roughly 19 miles.
USGS logged 825 "Did You Feel It?" reports within the first 45 minutes, producing a Community Determined Intensity of 4.1. That level corresponds to light shaking felt indoors, without damage. A seismologist has reviewed the reading.
The National Tsunami Warning Center issued no advisory. USGS recorded no foreshocks or aftershocks near the epicenter in the three hours around the event.
