Low water slows Seward's youth coho fishery, open through Oct. 5

Anglers 15 and younger have until 11:59 p.m. Monday, Oct. 5, to catch a coho at Seward Lagoon. Fishing has been slow: low water has held fish out of the lagoon, according to the Alaska Department of Fish and Game.

More than 250 coho have passed the Bear Creek weir. ADF&G expects rain to improve fishing conditions.

The fishery opened Aug. 25 and would normally have closed Sept. 7, with a two-coho daily and possession limit. Emergency Order 2-SS-8-50-26, effective Sept. 8, extends the season 28 days. The lagoon's coho are stocked for harvest, and the lagoon is not generally used to collect hatchery broodstock. Only anglers 15 and younger may fish the lagoon and its outfall stream, using one hook, with bait permitted; snagging is not allowed in fresh water. Anglers 16 and older are excluded, the trade-off for youth-only access.
