Koniag, the Alaska Native regional corporation for the Kodiak region, will distribute its $1,200 Fall 2026 Elder Benefit on Friday, Oct. 9, through the Koniag Benefits Trust to original shareholders age 62 and older who own at least one share of stock. The window to update a mailing address or direct deposit information for that payment closed Friday, Oct. 2.

Eligibility under Koniag's Fall 2026 Elder Benefit notice has three requirements. A shareholder must be an original shareholder, be 62 or older as of Sept. 29 and own at least one share of stock. Original shareholders are the roughly 3,400 Alutiiq people Koniag was formed to serve in 1972, not their descendants. Sept. 29 was also the date of record, the last day to change a name, gift stock, process an estate or transfer shares for this round.

The elder payment is not new. Koniag's benefits page says the Elder Benefit began in 2018 for original shareholders over 62. A spring distribution was added in 2024. The board of directors sets the amount and announces it at the annual meeting. The amount and the age threshold have both shifted over time. Koniag paid $1,000 to original shareholders 65 and older in November 2021, according to its 2021 election and dividend announcement. It paid $1,200 to original shareholders 62 and older on Oct. 11, 2024, according to its 2024 annual meeting recap.

Koniag's 2026 Annual Meeting of Shareholders takes place today, Saturday, Oct. 3, at the Dena'ina Civic and Convention Center in Anchorage. Shareholders who cannot attend can watch the livestream through the My Koniag portal.

Shareholders with questions about the elder payment can call 800-658-3818 or email [email protected].
