Kodiak review board to take up final North Star Elementary roof plans
The Kodiak Island Borough Architectural/Engineering Review Board will review final drawings Thursday, Oct. 8, for stripping the 39,800-square-foot low-slope roof of the former North Star Elementary School to its bare metal deck and replacing it.
The building is no longer an elementary school: in June the assembly authorized leasing a wing and the library to the Sun'aq Tribe of Kodiak for a preschool.
Alaska's FY2026 district facility plans list the cost at about $4.1 million. The main bid replaces the roof assembly; an optional add-on would swap the skylight system for a solid roof, new windows and new siding. In May 2025 the assembly changed the design contract to add a structural engineer to assess whether the building could support solid walls. The board approved the design at 95% completion June 29.
The building will stay occupied during the work; interior layout and exits will not change.
The board meets at 4 pm in the borough conference room, Room 121, and will take citizen comments.
