Kodiak westside, Afognak and Alitak sections stay open until 6 p.m. Monday

Kodiak permit holders fishing the westside, Afognak and Alitak sections are on a 45-hour extension that runs until 6 p.m. Monday, Aug. 17. Those sections had been scheduled to close at 9 p.m. Saturday.

The extension began at that hour and covers the Outer Karluk, Outer Ayakulik, Halibut Bay and Sturgeon sections of the Southwest Kodiak District; the Northwest Kodiak District except Anton Larsen Bay, Sharatin Bay and Kizhuyak Bay, which remain closed; the Southwest Afognak and Izhut Bay sections of the Afognak District; and the Cape Alitak, Alitak Bay, Moser Bay and Olga Bay sections of the Alitak District.

Other sections closed on schedule at 9 p.m. Saturday: Humpy-Deadman in the Alitak District, Seven Rivers, Two-Headed and Sitkalidak in Eastside Kodiak, the Northeast Kodiak District, and Northwest and Southeast Afognak.

The department's Aug. 14 inseason summary reported Karluk River late-run sockeye escapement within target range and pink salmon escapement above the desired level for that date. The order, filed as Emergency Order #4-FS-K-37-26, lists Kodiak area biologist Geoff Spalinger as its contact.

Purse seine gear may not retain Chinook salmon 28 inches or greater anywhere in the Kodiak Area, including the Mainland District, until further notice, and those fish must be returned to the water unharmed. ADF&G's 2025 Kodiak season summary counted 93 Chinook into the Karluk River against a biological escapement goal of 3,000 to 6,000 fish, and 444 into the Ayakulik River against a goal of 4,800 to 8,400.
