The Kenai City Council on Sept. 2 accepted a $3.16 million Federal Aviation Administration grant and awarded a $2.48 million construction contract to QAP to replace most of the perimeter fence at Kenai Municipal Airport.

The project will also improve the airport's gates and access control, for security and to deal with wildlife issues, according to the ordinance and staff memo in the council's packet. Interim Airport Manager Mary Bondurant confirmed the council's acceptance in a report to the airport commission.

The whole project is estimated at $3.32 million. The FAA pays 95%, and the city's 5% share, $166,172, is covered by the $247,500 the city had already spent to design the project.

QAP was the lowest of three bidders. Chumley's Inc. bid $2.65 million and B&B Electric $5.6 million. QAP is also the contractor on the airport's runway reconstruction, City Manager Terry Eubank told the council Sept. 16.
