Kaawu Oyster Company seeks to add acreage and double its lease term at Port Frederick

Kaawu Oyster Company is seeking to amend and renew its 10-year aquatic farm lease at Port Frederick near Hoonah, according to a notice the Alaska Department of Natural Resources published Wednesday on the state's public notice system. The amendment would add two parcels and gear, bringing the site to 9.98 acres of state tide and submerged lands, and the renewal would run 20 years.

The farm, owned by Anthony Lindoff, grows Pacific oysters on rafts and floating longline systems in the largely Tlingit community. The same lease, ADL 108091, was subject to a 2019 amendment application for a work raft at Port Fredrikson that was later closed. The leases carry fees, bonding and commercial-use requirements.

DNR has made a preliminary decision to offer both; a final decision has not been issued. Written comments go to Jen Kopnicky at [email protected] by 11:59 p.m. Sept. 28. Only people who comment may appeal the final decision.
