Juneau Crime Count Falls Again as Assaults Rise a Third Year

Reported crime in Juneau fell for a second straight year in 2025. One category has now risen three years running.

The Juneau Police Department reported 1,052 offenses last year, down from 1,118 in 2024 and from a peak of 1,440 in 2023. Statewide the count went the other way, up 7.2 percent, which the Department of Public Safety attributes largely to Anchorage, where reported offenses rose 14.6 percent.

Most of Juneau's decline came from theft. Larceny fell from 729 offenses in 2023 to 464 last year. The city recorded no murder or non-negligent manslaughter in 2025.

Reported rapes fell from 86 in 2022 to 18 in 2025, though that figure is harder to read than it looks. The state counts rapes by victim and records them in the year they are reported, so one case involving repeated assaults over years can produce a large count in a single year and none afterward.

Aggravated assault has climbed since 2022, from 95 offenses to 109, then 112, then 122 last year.

The shift inside that category is sharper than the total suggests. Assaults involving weapons other than knives or firearms went from 42 offenses in 2023 to 50 in 2024 to 77 in 2025, an increase of 83 percent in two years. Assaults involving knives fell over the same period. Nothing in the state's report explains why.

Motor vehicle theft also rose, from 45 offenses to 50.

Juneau police cleared 330 cases last year, 31.4 percent of what was reported. That is up from 27.9 percent in 2024 and 28.8 percent in 2023. It is well short of 2022, when the department cleared 47.6 percent.

The report counts 41 sworn officers and 33 civilian employees at the department.

The state cautions against reading one year against another, since offenses are counted by the year reported rather than the year they happened. The Juneau Police Department has published no annual report of its own covering 2025.
