Juneau Crime Count Falls Again as Assaults Rise a Third Year

Reported crime in Juneau fell for a second straight year in 2025, even as the statewide count rose, according to figures the Alaska Department of Public Safety released Wednesday, Aug. 26. Aggravated assault in the capital rose for a third consecutive year.

The Juneau Police Department reported 1,052 offenses in 2025, down from 1,118 in 2024, a drop of 5.9 percent. Statewide, reported offenses rose 7.2 percent, which the department attributes to violent and property crime in Anchorage, where reported offenses rose 14.6 percent. Offenses reported by the Alaska State Troopers fell 5.9 percent. Overall crime in Alaska remains 36.9 percent below 2018 levels. The two counts are not the same measure. The statewide figure tracks eight major categories and leaves out simple assault, which accounts for 308 of Juneau's 1,052.

Juneau's decline comes off a peak. The city reported 1,233 offenses in 2022, 1,440 in 2023, 1,118 in 2024 and 1,052 in 2025, a 26.9 percent drop from 2023. Most categories fell, led by larceny theft, from 729 offenses in 2023 to 464 in 2025. Juneau recorded no murder or non-negligent manslaughter in 2025. Rapes fell each year, from 86 in 2022 to 18 in 2025; the department counts rapes by victim, so a single case spanning years can produce many counts in the year it is reported.

Two categories rose. Aggravated assault went from 109 offenses in 2023 to 112 in 2024 and 122 in 2025. The 2022 count was 95, which makes 2025 the third straight increase. Statewide the category ran 3,976 offenses in 2022 and 3,843 in 2025. Within that category, assaults involving other dangerous weapons rose from 42 offenses in 2023 to 50 in 2024 and 77 in 2025, an increase of 83 percent, while assaults involving a knife fell. Motor vehicle theft rose from 45 offenses to 50. No record reviewed offers an explanation for the assault increase.

The value of stolen property fell with the theft count: 622 offenses involving stolen property worth about $654,000 in 2025, against 704 offenses worth about $993,000 in 2024. Arson is counted separately, with five offenses in 2025 and about $581,000 in estimated damage, $500,000 of it from a single house fire. The department also recorded one uncleared human trafficking offense for commercial sex acts.

Juneau police cleared 330 of the 1,052 offenses reported in 2025, or 31.4 percent, compared with 27.9 percent in 2024 and 28.8 percent in 2023, well below the 47.6 percent cleared in 2022.

The department publishes no crime rate for Juneau and cautions against comparing one year with the next, since it counts offenses by the year reported rather than the year they occurred. The 2025 report covers 32 reporting agencies serving 99.6 percent of the state population.

The report counts 41 sworn officers and 33 civilian employees at the Juneau Police Department, which has published no annual report covering 2025.
