Haines Highway paving means 20-minute waits through Sunday

Paving crews are working the Haines Highway between mileposts 20 and 25 through Sunday, closing one lane at a time and running traffic behind pilot cars. Waits can reach 20 minutes.

Work runs 6 am to 8 pm daily, with flaggers directing traffic during those hours. Which lane closes rotates by day, but the effect is the same either way: wait for the pilot car.

Klukwan drivers have a change on Saturday. Traffic uses the South Entrance in the morning and the Klukwan School entrance in the afternoon, with a flagger stationed there. The Middle Road entrance is closed.

Anyone whose driveway comes off a closed lane cannot use it until the new asphalt cools enough to drive on. Access to the boat launch at mile 20.5 is not affected Saturday or Sunday.

This is the last segment of a corridor rebuild that began in 2018, straightening and widening the highway to a 55 mph design standard. The rest of the paving schedule comes out Saturday and depends on the weather.
