Alaska federal awards run 33.9% below prior three-month total

Alaska's trailing three-month federal award total fell to $3.14 billion, a $1.61 billion drop, or 33.9%, from $4.74 billion in the prior three months, according to USAspending.gov data for the 13-month window ending Sept. 4.

A Sept. 7 snapshot shows $16.19 billion in federal award dollars across 20,294 prime awards, excluding subawards, ranking Alaska 45th among 56 states and territories.

The newest month, the 12th month of fiscal 2026, shows just $5.20 million through Sept. 4, compared with $2.31 billion in the window's highest month; cumulative spending reached $18.23 billion. Totals measure place of performance and can swing with the timing of large awards, so the decline alone is not evidence of a permanent cut or an economic downturn.

In the window ending Aug. 28, the trailing three-month total stood at $4.13 billion, a 15.7% decline. University of Alaska Anchorage economist Brett Watson has described federal contracts as the state's fastest-growing spending category.
