Fairview council asks Anchorage to restore funding to keep rec center open to 9 pm
The Fairview Community Council voted unanimously in September to ask the Anchorage Assembly and the municipal administration to restore funding so the Fairview Community Recreation Center stays open until 9 pm on weekdays, with reasonable weekend hours.
The council says reduced hours have made it harder for community groups to use the center and have led to a decline in program revenue. It also says the administration did not consult its executive board on the justification for cutting the hours. The city's Fairview Recreation Center page lists hours of noon to 8 pm daily.
The resolution also asks the Parks and Recreation Department to attend the council's executive board meetings at least twice a year to give updates on the center and department projects.
Assembly Vice Chair Daniel Volland and Assembly Member Sydney Scout, who both represent North Anchorage, forwarded the resolution in an information memorandum for the Assembly's meeting Tuesday, Oct. 20. The memo asks for no vote and includes no response from the Parks and Recreation Department.
