The Fairbanks North Star Borough is seeking federal trail money for Chena Lake and Tanana Lakes, according to state public notices dated Friday. The notices list Recreational Trails Program applications for North Trail access improvements at Chena Lake Recreation Area and for Flicker Trailhead enhancement and trail alignment at Tanana Lakes Recreation Area. They do not show dollar amounts, construction dates, award status, trail lengths or detailed project scopes.

The borough's capital plan separately lists projects at both areas. The Assembly adopted the $173.57 million FY2027 Capital Improvement Program on Feb. 26 in Resolution No. 2026-04. The resolution does not say these capital-plan projects are the same ones named in the October grant applications.

The plan lists Chena Lake Area Revitalization Phase I at $1,330,240 and a later phase, one of four planned, at $4,207,027 for roads, parking areas and possible campsite accessibility upgrades. A separate Tanana Lakes project totals $2.6 million.

The Parks and Recreation Commission backed both grant applications Sept. 21. Alaska News previously covered the state trail grant round, which closes Oct. 30. Award status for the applications remains unknown.
