About this event
The Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities (DOT&PF) has announced the commencement of engineering and environmental studies for a restoration project on the Haines Highway at Mileposts 2.3 and 3.7. The project, identified as SFHWY00724, aims to reconstruct pavement, stabilize embankments, remediate frost-susceptible materials, and improve drainage and culvert systems.
The project is currently undergoing environmental review under the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA), with the agency anticipating a Categorical Exclusion. The review process is being conducted under a Memorandum of Understanding between the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) and DOT&PF, dated April 13, 2023, pursuant to 23 U.S.C. 327.
DOT&PF is soliciting public comments regarding potential environmental, social, and economic impacts, as well as effects on historic and cultural resources. Comments must be submitted to Environmental Impact Analyst Connor Brown by November 4, 2026. Construction for the project is currently scheduled to begin in the spring of 2028.
