Dalton Highway to drop to one lane at mile 25 Saturday for a vehicle recovery
The state transportation department scheduled the Dalton Highway to drop to one lane at mile marker 25 on Saturday for a vehicle recovery. The work was set to run from 10 am to 4 pm. The site is about 13 miles northwest of Livengood in a straight line.
Drivers in both directions should expect to stop. The department's Alaska 511 traffic notice says the recovery is expected to take several hours, with intermittent closures. One lane is to stay open between closures, and flaggers will be on scene. The notice asks drivers to travel with caution and obey all traffic signs.
Alaska 511 lists the event as an accident or incident. It does not say who is doing the recovery, and it gives no details on injuries or cause.
Alaska 511 has listed several other closures and blockages on the highway this fall. On Sept. 29, a tractor-trailer blocked the highway at Mile 320 in both directions. On Oct. 15, flaggers were scheduled to support a load recovery during intermittent closures near Mile 7.5 from 7:30 to 9:30 pm. The next night, a disabled vehicle blocked the northbound lane near Mile 86. On Oct. 17, a disabled northbound truck closed all lanes near the south side of Gobblers Knob.
On Thursday night, Alaska 511 reported the highway closed in both directions at mile marker 160 for a jackknifed tractor-trailer. That closure was planned to end at 9:31 am Friday. It was no longer listed as of Saturday morning.
Alaska 511 posts current conditions on its Dalton Highway page. Drivers can dial 511 in Alaska or 866-282-7577 from out of state. Alaska 511 recommends calling before leaving home or while stopped, and never while driving.
