Nunaka: My Village teaches Sugt'stun through play, free on both app stores
Chugachmiut released a new gameplay video Sept. 1 for Nunaka: My Village, its free mobile game built to teach the Sugt'stun language and Sugpiaq traditions. Chugachmiut is the tribal consortium serving the seven Native tribes of the Chugach Region.
The video walks through a virtual Sugpiaq village where players meet residents, complete activities and find traditions drawn from life in the Chugach Region. The app is free on the Apple App Store and Google Play and is aimed at children, families and learners at any level, including people picking up their first Sugt'stun words.
Nunaka: My Village was developed by the Chugachmiut Heritage Preservation Program and the studio FableVision, working with Chugachmiut Birth to Five Head Start. Sugpiaq community partners, Elders and language bearers guided the cultural and linguistic design. Development was paid for with support from the U.S. Department of Education.
Chugachmiut posted about the game being up for an award in November 2024, and its Summer 2026 Nupuat newsletter noted the project was named a Webby Honoree, a tier the awards place in the top 25% of entries worldwide.
