Burn bans expand to Delta, Tok, Mat-Su as Red Flag Warning looms Friday

Alaska Division of Forestry suspended burn permits Thursday in Delta, Tok, and Mat-Su as a Red Flag Warning takes effect Friday afternoon across the Susitna Valley and Lower Matanuska Valley due to lightning, dry fuels, and high winds.

Burn Restrictions Expand Across Interior and Southcentral Alaska

The Alaska Division of Forestry & Fire Protection suspended burn permits in the Delta, Tok, and Mat-Su fire prevention areas effective Thursday, June 18, adding to ongoing suspensions already in place for Fairbanks, Salcha, and the Railbelt.

The National Weather Service in Anchorage issued a Red Flag Warning covering Lime Village, the Lower Matanuska Valley, and all sectors of the Susitna Valley, including the Northern, Southern, Eastern, Western, and Central Susitna Valley. The warning runs from 1 p.m. to 9 p.m. Friday, June 19. Critical fire weather conditions are expected due to abundant lightning and dry fuels. "Any new fire starts or existing fires may spread rapidly," the Division said.

In Alaska, a Red Flag Warning means warm temperatures, low humidity, and strong winds are combining with dry fuels such as grass and dead trees to create a high risk of wildfire.

The new suspensions prohibit debris burning, lawn burning, and burn barrels. Cooking and warming fires remain legal if they stay under three feet in diameter with flame lengths under two feet. The Division warned that "even a small ember, an unattended fire, or a fire that is not fully extinguished can quickly lead to a wildfire."

Solstice Weekend Fire Danger

The Division noted that long daylight hours around the Summer Solstice can rapidly dry out areas even after rain, and lightning storms are forecast statewide this weekend. The suspension is due to warm weather, lack of significant wetting rain, and high winds, according to the Division.

The Division urged residents to avoid burning, keep equipment that may emit sparks such as chainsaws or lawnmowers away from dry, grassy areas, properly dispose of cigarettes and never throw butts on the ground or from a vehicle, and fully extinguish campfires by drowning them with water, stirring the ashes, and checking for remaining heat.

Where to Check and Who to Call

Residents can check current burn permit status at dnr.alaska.gov/burn. Area hotlines: Mat-Su (907) 761-6312, Delta (907) 895-5483, Tok (907) 883-1413 ext. 2303, Fairbanks (907) 451-2631.

The suspension stays in place until conditions change.
