Atka IRA Council gets $548,271 federal grant to build four greenhouses in the Aleutian village

Four greenhouses are coming to Atka, a roadless Aleutian village of about 60 people. Fresh produce there travels a long, weather-sensitive air and marine supply chain and often arrives expensive with little shelf life left, the village's tribal government says in its proposal. The Atka IRA Council, the tribal government organized under the federal Indian Reorganization Act, will fund the project with a $548,271 federal grant, according to federal award records, which describe Atka as a remote Unangax̂ community.

The money comes from the Administration for Native Americans' Eagle program, part of the Administration for Children and Families within the Department of Health and Human Services. The award period runs from Sept. 30, 2026, to Sept. 29, 2029.

The plan calls for four 26-foot geodesic-dome greenhouses. Two are to be commissioned in the first year and two more in the second. The third year is set aside for running all four together and refining production.

The units are to include irrigation, environmental controls, supplemental lighting, dehumidification and rodent-exclusion measures. Produce will go through the Atka community store and other established community channels.

The federal money covers equipment, operations, staffing, training, supplies and travel, including an agricultural operations manager to oversee production and training. Non-federal resources are to pay for site preparation, foundations, anchoring and installation.

The Administration for Native Americans calls its grants short-term seed funding. Projects must be finished by the end of the period or carried by other money. By the end of the grant, the proposal says, the village will have trained local operators and documented systems for continued greenhouse management.
