Aniak high school teams still compete as the 'Halfbreeds'

Aniak Jr. Sr. High School's teams still compete under the nickname Halfbreeds. It appears on the 2025-26 schedules, rosters and streaming pages, and on the 2026 state 1A boys basketball bracket.

The Kuspuk School District Board of Education holds authority over school naming decisions. Its seven members are Dwayne Hoffman, president, Jeanette Hoffman, vice president, Sue Hoeldt, secretary and treasurer, and Rachelle Persson, Phyllis Evan, Audrey Leary and Gail Vanderpool. Dwayne Hoffman was president in September 2024 as well, on a mostly different board.

Aniak students chose the name in the late 1970s. It replaced Apostles for boys teams and Angels for girls teams.

Nothing in the district's published material identifies board action on the nickname, though its minutes and board packets, posted as files in a shared drive, were not read for this account.
