Anchorage Mayor Suzanne LaFrance has asked the Assembly to award Northern Gravel & Trucking a road maintenance contract worth up to $4 million for the South Goldenview Rural Road Service Area. The Assembly takes up the request Tuesday, Oct. 20, on its consent agenda.

The contract covers winter and summer work, including snow clearing, sanding, steam thawing, grading and culvert clearing, and also permits limited road construction. Spending is capped at $800,000 a year.

Northern Gravel bid $716,825, beating Smithsons' $1,155,875 by about $439,000. Courtney Petersen, manager of Public Works Administration, recommended Northern Gravel as the lowest responsive and responsible bidder, according to the recommendation of award.

The first term runs through Aug. 31, 2027. Four one-year renewals at the same unit prices, each subject to mutual agreement and funding, would bring the total to $4 million, according to the Assembly memorandum.

Northern Gravel has maintained the area under a contract awarded in 2021 with a yearly cap of $600,000. As Alaska News reported Aug. 30, the administration sought $305,000 more on that contract for erosion repairs after ice buildup and spring runoff, which would raise its total to $3,455,000.
