Anchorage firm gets $7.1 million Colorado prison contract, awarded without competition

The Federal Bureau of Prisons will pay Anchorage-based Bering Straits Professional Services, LLC $7,095,383 to replace the main electrical distribution panel at the Florence Federal Correctional Complex in Colorado, with no work occurring in Alaska.

The bureau's award notice records the job as an 8(a) sole source, meaning no bidding. Federal records show one offer. Alaska Native Corporation-owned 8(a) firms may receive sole-source awards of any dollar value, exempt from competition thresholds.

The performance period runs Oct. 6 through Jan. 4, 2028, and covers both the correctional institution and the prison camp. Federal records tie the project to Executive Order 14398, signed in March on DEI discrimination by federal contractors.

Bering Straits is an SBA-certified 8(a) small disadvantaged business affiliated with Bering Straits Native Corporation. The 8(a) program is the Small Business Administration's development track for disadvantaged firms. It recently won a $647,186 State Department anti-trafficking research award.
