Physician's board appeal cannot proceed until $750 bond is paid or waived

An Anchorage Superior Court notice says an Alaska State Medical Board appeal cannot proceed until a $750 cost bond is paid or waived. A cost bond covers the other side's costs if an appeal fails. Corey Jon Meyers filed the appeal Wednesday with no attorney recorded for either side.

The court issued a cost bond deficiency notice the same day. The docket also includes a line reading "Cash Deposit Appeal Posted," though the financial page lists no bond amount or deposit section, so the deficiency notice alone does not establish that no cash was tendered.

Alaska Rules of Appellate Procedure set the bond at $750 and require it with the notice of appeal in an agency case, with exemptions for criminal cases, indigent parties and certain benefits appeals. A same-day deficiency notice is therefore what the rule produces.

The record does not say what the Medical Board decided. This is the first Board appeal since October 2023, when deposits and attorneys appeared promptly and deficiency notices sought only a missing form. The case remains open; Judge Adolf V. Zeman is assigned.
