AMHS opens comment window on winter 2026/27 ferry schedule; deadline July 22
The Alaska Marine Highway System has released its draft winter 2026/27 ferry schedule for public review and comment. Written comments are due by 5 p.m. AKST on July 22, submitted by email to [email protected] or by fax to 907-228-6873. The draft schedule covers sailings from October 1, 2026, through April 30, 2027, and is posted at dot.alaska.gov/amhs/doc/winter_considerations_2026-2027.pdf.
The Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities released the draft schedule Wednesday. Two virtual public hearings follow on July 23 to hear community feedback and consider schedule adjustments. The Southeast Alaska session begins at 9 a.m. The Southwest and South Central Alaska session begins at 11 a.m. Both are accessible by Zoom or phone, and in person at the AMHS Ketchikan Central Office at 7037 North Tongass Highway.
The agency is also asking communities to submit local special event names, dates, locations, and arrival and departure times. DOT&PF spokesperson Gabe Strong said the department will work to contract supplemental service, if necessary, to avoid disrupting community events.
Vessel Constraints
The M/V Aurora will undergo an extended overhaul from October 1, 2026, through March 5, 2027, after crews discovered extensive wasted steel during maintenance. AMHS stated that the safety of passengers and crew is its first priority. The Aurora currently serves Whittier, Cordova, Valdez, Tatitlek, and Chenega Bay.
The Aurora overhaul is the longest of four scheduled this winter. The M/V Columbia is set for overhaul from November 25, 2026, through April 30, 2027. The M/V Kennicott goes into a state overhaul from October 1 through December 1, and the M/V Tustumena is scheduled for overhaul from January 15 through April 30, 2027. AMHS serves 35 communities statewide.
Ferry users and community advocates have argued in prior schedule cycles that limited winter sailings leave roadless communities without reliable access to groceries, health care, and regional events. The AMHS operating plan depends on legislative funding and earned revenue.
Strong can be reached at 907-228-7259 or [email protected]. Anyone needing disability accommodations must contact the AMHS administrative office by July 20.
