The Alaska Division of Community and Regional Affairs and FEMA Region 10 will hold a free four-day floodplain course in Anchorage Dec. 1-4, Tuesday through Friday. The class is for local officials who administer local floodplain management ordinances under the National Flood Insurance Program.

Communities in the program must apply minimum floodplain standards to development, the division says. The course covers the program, flood maps and studies, ordinance administration and how floodplain management relates to flood insurance. It is designed for officials with less than five years of floodplain management experience.

The division has grant funding approval to reimburse travel and lodging for a limited number of Alaska officials who complete the course. Prior approval is required. Hotel, transportation and meal per diem are not otherwise provided.

Classes run 8 am to 5 pm at the William Jack Hernandez Sport Fish Hatchery. Officials register through FEMA's online admissions portal.

Based on a press release from Alaska Department of Commerce, Community, and Economic Development.
