Alaska joins the EMS compact Sunday, with several steps still required

Alaska joins the interstate EMS Compact on Sunday, which lets clinicians holding a valid, unrestricted license in another member state practice here. New state guidance is blunt that this does not mean anyone can show up and go to work.

Before an out-of-state clinician goes on duty, the hiring agency has to confirm their identity, verify the home-state license and privilege, complete local credentialing, obtain medical director authorization and document all of it. If the person's record is not in the national EMS database, verification runs through the state office or the home state instead.

Alaska is not in that database yet. The commission that runs the compact lists 25 states where the privilege is valid, and Alaska is not among them; it is recorded as pending implementation.

It does not work in the other direction either. An Alaska EMS license "does not automatically establish eligibility" to practice in another compact state, the state Office of Emergency Medical Services said Wednesday.

Fingerprint background checks start for new Alaska EMS licenses on April 1, 2027, and for all renewals that Oct. 1.
