Alaska House adjourns until Monday technical session, takes no floor action

No votes, no debate as House adjourns to Monday

The Alaska House of Representatives will not take up floor business until Monday. The chamber adjourned Friday morning after brief procedural motions that produced no votes and no debate.

The majority leader moved for adjournment until 10:30 a.m. Monday, Aug. 3. No member objected. "There being no objection, the House will stand in adjournment until Monday, August 3rd at 10.30 a.m. for a technical session," the presiding officer said.

A pattern of technical sessions

The pause continues a pattern the chamber has held through the summer. Under the Alaska Constitution, neither house may adjourn or recess longer than three days unless the other concurs. Brief technical sessions satisfy that rule without putting contested measures on the floor.

Lawmakers remain in the fourth special session, called on natural gas taxation. Alaska News previously covered the Alaska State Senate opening that session Monday, July 27, as a technical session. The Senate then adjourned to Friday, July 31, after word that the House had killed the gas tax bill, HB 381.
