Alaska clerks are under four weeks out from local elections

Alaska municipal clerks have 26 days to finish the work required before most local elections on Oct. 6, unless a local ordinance sets a different date. State officials walked them through the checklist Thursday.

The Division of Community and Regional Affairs asked clerks whether public notices had gone out, whether they had ordered the precinct register, the list voters sign in on at the polls, and whether election officials and judges were lined up.

One item on that list had already come and gone. State training material tells clerks to request the register 30 days before polling day, which was Sept. 6. The state's own published guide muddies it, saying registers arrive automatically for a regular election and that the 30-day mark is the voter registration cutoff rather than an ordering deadline.

State law requires at least 20 days' notice of an election, listing the races, the ballot questions and the time, place and date of voting.

The division holds a final check-in Oct. 1 and a debrief Oct. 8.
