A medical board appeal stalls over a $750 bond

An appeal of an Alaska State Medical Board decision cannot move forward until a $750 cost bond is paid or waived, according to an Anchorage Superior Court notice. The bond exists to cover the other side's costs if the appeal fails.

Corey Jon Meyers filed the appeal Wednesday. No attorney is recorded for either side. The court issued its deficiency notice over the bond the same day.

That timing is not unusual. Alaska's appellate rules set the bond at $750 and require it to arrive with the notice of appeal in an agency case, so a same-day notice is what the rule produces. Exemptions exist for criminal cases, indigent parties and certain benefits appeals.

The docket does carry a line reading "Cash Deposit Appeal Posted," though the financial page lists no bond amount, so the deficiency notice by itself does not establish that nothing was tendered.

The record does not say what the board decided. It is the first appeal of a board decision since October 2023, when the filings came in with deposits and attorneys in place. The case is open before Judge Adolf V. Zeman.
