A GOP power player is fighting Rep. Stutes over her leftover campaign cash

Randy Ruedrich, the former longtime chair of the Alaska Republican Party, has a complaint against Rep. Louise Stutes over what she's allowed to do with her leftover campaign money — and state regulators take it up Monday.

At issue is a question with real stakes for any Alaska politician sitting on unspent donations: what counts as a legal way to spend down a campaign account after the race is over. Legislators can park leftover funds in a public office expense account, but the money has to be disposed of by the end of the term — and the fight here is over which disbursements actually clear that bar.

The Alaska Public Offices Commission will weigh both Stutes' appeal and a proposed settlement in the case at a 2 p.m. meeting Monday.
