As a person, I look at the one piece of empirical data that I could find on this topic of at-large or district-based school board elections. And there was a 2014 study by the Fordham Institute and indicated that districts where at-large board membership elections occurred had correlated better with positive academic outcomes. Specifically regarding their ability to outperform expectations. I don't think that's enough to say that, that one study indicates that it's definitively a model that's best for students, but I couldn't find an alternate study that demonstrated that students fared academically better in an at-large in a district-based elected school board setting.
