I respectfully asked the commission to review this matter and consider solutions or policy adjustments that could safely allow expanded access for responsible youth participants ages 14 plus without parental supervision. I'm frustrated that I have to send my family to neighboring communities to access opportunities that are unavailable here due to restrictive policies. Many other Kenai residents are doing the same. Let's encourage participants and make the most of our facilities, not push young adults elsewhere because policy change quote, would create additional operation challenges and potential barriers to the facility access. Let's not discriminate based on age and use logic thinking a 16 year old is able to drive a motor vehicle by themselves on our highways, but they can't access our weight rooms.
A Kenai resident asked the Parks & Recreation Commission to lower the independent weight room access age from 16 to 14, citing that neighboring facilities allow younger access and the current policy drives families to other communities.
