Wasilla's legislative ask leads with $10 million aviation training center at city airport

Wasilla's legislative priorities ask state and federal lawmakers for $10 million to build a commercial-size aviation training center at Wasilla Airport, the largest on a capital list the Wasilla Planning Commission revisits Tuesday. The item is scheduled for discussion, not a vote; turning requests into construction spending would require separate legislative action, grants and further City Council approvals.

Other items include $3.9 million to replace failing septic tanks that risk leaking into waterbodies, $2 million each for water system expansion, wastewater plant improvements and ADA-accessible trail, park and playground upgrades, plus smaller requests for stormwater mapping, an airport backup power feed and safety upgrades at the Curtis D. Menard Memorial Sports Center.

The City Council adopted the priorities Feb. 9, six votes to none, sponsored by Mayor Glenda D. Ledford.

The commission meets at 6 p.m. at City Hall, 290 E. Herning Ave. Public comment is limited to five minutes. Written comments are due by noon that day, to [email protected].
