Wasilla man dies after fleeing troopers at 100 mph following domestic assault
Cecil Nelson, 57, of Wasilla, died Saturday evening after a domestic violence call turned into a high-speed chase, Alaska State Troopers said.
Troopers received a 911 call at 6:21 p.m. reporting that Nelson had entered a residence without permission, assaulted the caller, and refused to leave. He was reportedly intoxicated. Nelson fled before troopers arrived.
When troopers located his vehicle and attempted a stop, Nelson refused. "During the pursuit, Nelson reached speeds of approximately 100 MPH and passed traffic using the oncoming lane, causing a significant risk to the public," Alaska State Troopers said. Troopers described the chase as a short pursuit. Nelson lost control on a curve, left the roadway, and was ejected because he was not wearing a seatbelt. Troopers attempted lifesaving measures before pronouncing him dead at the scene. His next of kin was notified.
The domestic violence assault investigation remains ongoing, troopers said. No criminal charges had been filed against Nelson, according to the dispatch.
