Unalaska hires a roofing consultant for eight failed roofs, with no dollar amount attached

The Unalaska City Council hired Cornerstone Architectural Group on Tuesday, Sept. 8, to design repairs for eight failed or failing city roofs: the Amaknak Island Fire Station, Supply Warehouse, Burma Road Chapel, Old Powerhouse, power substation, Water Treatment Plant, Marine Center Warehouse and portions of Unalaska High School. Most were rated good to fair, needing only ongoing maintenance. The failures risk disrupting classes, clean water and power.

The move advances the city's roofing program but does not put full repairs under contract. It carries no dollar amount; the city owes nothing until it issues task orders.

Cornerstone, under city contract since 2025, assessed all 27 roofs on July 30 and 31, 2025. Three firms answered the June 4, 2026 request for qualifications, a solicitation judged on experience, not price, anticipating work on 27 city buildings over 10 years.

Replacing the high school's failed roof areas A, B and D is estimated at $3.5 million. In an Oct. 14, 2025 memorandum, Public Works Director Brian Thacker wrote that "in today's dollars, the consultant estimates fixing all the roofs will be at least $22 million to begin." The city has appropriated $12.6 million.
