The roof went on wrong at Bethel's gym expansion and has to come off

A subcontractor installed the roof and wall panels incorrectly at Bethel's YK Community Center, and they are coming back off. The contractor, UIC, caught the error itself. Crews will salvage what panels they can, put new ones on the roof, and the city will not be billed for the redo.

What the city loses is time. The construction schedule had the building substantially finished Oct. 24, with equipment installation, training and punch-list work stacked behind that, and everything wrapped by Nov. 13. Parks and Recreation Director Shane Iverson reported the panel problem without offering a new date.

There is a later date floating around. A separate city document lists a target completion of Dec. 31, about six weeks past the schedule the city had been working from. Nothing reconciles the two.

The Community Parks and Recreation Committee takes up a construction update Monday at 6 pm. Written comment is due to the city's public works office by 4 pm that day.
