Sullivan and Coast Guard's Lunday to mark Kodiak icebreaker investments Tuesday

Kodiak will homeport the Coast Guard's first two Arctic Security Cutters. The first vessel is scheduled for delivery in 2028, part of a broader buildup that also sends a third cutter to Seward once shoreside infrastructure is ready.

U.S. Sen. Dan Sullivan and Adm. Kevin Lunday, the Coast Guard's acting commandant, will appear in Kodiak on Tuesday, Aug. 11, from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. on the second floor of the Kodiak Marketplace to mark the cutters and other Coast Guard investments headed to the island. Refreshments will be served. The Kodiak Island Borough has notified the public that a quorum of its officials may attend.

Koniag extended the invitations to the borough mayor, manager and Assembly members. The notice invites local leadership and does not say whether the general public may attend.

"Koniag has been asked to help extend invitations to local leadership for an event with Senator Dan Sullivan and Admiral Lunday to celebrate Arctic Security Cutters and other major Coast Guard investments coming to Kodiak," Marya Halvorsen, Koniag's vice president for government and regional affairs, wrote to borough clerks Friday.

The borough said the gathering is not an official meeting and that officials will take no formal action.

Alaska's congressional delegation secured $3.5 billion for three of the cutters and more than $3 billion for shoreside infrastructure through the 2025 Working Families Tax Cuts Act. The Coast Guard has said Alaska could receive up to four of the 11 Arctic Security Cutters announced under the U.S.-Finland Icebreaker Agreement and ICE Pact. Kodiak, a borough of about 13,000 people, already hosts the nation's largest Coast Guard base.

The new homeports carry obligations beyond the vessels themselves. Crews, support systems, housing, schools and base services must serve service members and families in Kodiak and elsewhere in Alaska.

The notice includes no agenda, funding figures or construction timeline.
