Coast Guard to homeport four icebreakers in Alaska
The Coast Guard will homeport two Arctic Security Cutters in Kodiak and a third in Seward once infrastructure is complete, adding to an existing ice-capable cutter already stationed in Juneau.
The announcement marks a fourth Alaska-based icebreaker on top of the two Arctic Security Cutters announced in April and the Coast Guard Cutter Storis, a retrofitted commercial icebreaker commissioned in Juneau on August 10, 2025. The three new Arctic Security Cutters will join the Storis to give Alaska four ice-capable cutters once all are operational.
The first Arctic Security Cutter is scheduled for delivery in 2028. The Alaska congressional delegation secured $3.5 billion for the three vessels through the 2025 Working Families Tax Cuts Act, along with more than $3 billion for shoreside infrastructure including housing and facilities for Coast Guard families.
Sen. Lisa Murkowski expressed concern in January that shoreside construction was lagging behind vessel production. "I'm worried that we're not being as forward leaning on the shore side infrastructure that we need to be for these 11 Arctic Security cutters," Murkowski said.
The 2025 Working Families Tax Cuts Act also funded a broader Coast Guard fleet expansion: $1 billion for Fast Response Cutters, $4.3 billion for Offshore Patrol Cutters, $816 million for more than 10 new light and medium domestic icebreaking cutters, $2.2 billion for approximately 40 MH-60 helicopters, and $1.1 billion for HC-130 aircraft. The legislation separately allocated $4.3 billion for two Polar Security Cutters, the Coast Guard's heavy polar icebreakers.
Sens. Dan Sullivan and Murkowski and Rep. Nick Begich led the Alaska delegation's effort to secure the funding. Sullivan framed the investment as a response to geopolitical competition in the Arctic and a source of economic development for coastal communities.
The Seward homeport assignment is contingent on completion of supporting infrastructure. The Coast Guard has not announced a timeline for that construction.
