Sitka airport closes pre-security restrooms for about six weeks
Travelers at Sitka Rocky Gutierrez Airport lose indoor restroom access before the security checkpoint starting in September, when the pre-security public restrooms close for about six weeks of remodeling.
The City and Borough of Sitka said the work continues into October. Temporary restrooms will sit outside the terminal in the loading zone throughout the closure, with directional signage and a city-posted image showing their location.
Restrooms inside the secure area remain open to ticketed passengers who have cleared TSA screening. The city encourages arriving passengers to use them before leaving the secure area, according to its Aug. 25 public service announcement. Questions go to Airport Terminal Manager Joseph Bea at [email protected] or 907-747-1803.
The closure is part of the Airport Terminal Improvement Project, a $40 million effort that adds a two-story addition on the terminal's southeast side with two screening lanes, larger gate lounges, new restrooms and a concessions area. About $36 million comes from TSA and FAA grants, with a $4 million local match funded by passenger facility charges. Federal Airport Terminal Program funding covers remodeling 17,900 square feet and expanding the terminal by 23,680 square feet, including an added boarding bridge and more baggage claim space.
