Richardson Highway traffic stops planned near Eielson through Sunday

Drivers on the Richardson Highway near Eielson Air Force Base face brief traffic stops in both directions Friday through Sunday during airshow flyovers.

Alaska 511 lists restrictions between mile marker 341 and mile marker 338. They are in effect from 8 p.m. Thursday through 5 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 2. The traffic-event card reports no full closure and no lane data.

The stops are timed to the performances. The highway is expected to close at roughly 3 to 3:30 p.m. Friday. On Saturday and Sunday, closures are expected at roughly 12:30 to 12:45 p.m. and again at 3:30 to 3:45 p.m. Alaska 511 advises drivers to expect delays.

The affected segment sits on the route between Fairbanks and Delta Junction. Lt. Col. Derek Wright, the airshow coordinator with the 354th Fighter Wing, and an Alaska State Troopers spokesperson said closures during the aerobatic performances will be intermittent and that a local detour will be available. Public guidance for the event also says the closures will not affect emergency services.
