Palmer man sentenced to one year and five days in child abuse material case

A Palmer man will register as a sex offender for life after being sentenced to one year and five days of incarceration for possession of child sexual abuse material. Jason Hafley, 48, pleaded guilty, the Alaska Department of Public Safety said in a dispatch posted Monday.

How the case began

The case started in November 2020, when Task Force Dawnbreaker received a cybertip from the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children. The tip reported that a user had uploaded child sexual abuse material online. Investigators identified the account user as Hafley, who was already a registered sex offender from Kentucky. Troopers arrested him without incident in August 2021, about nine months after the tip. Nearly five years passed between that arrest and the plea.

A pattern of similar cases

Task Force Dawnbreaker has driven several recent Alaska cases with the same starting point. Alaska News previously covered the sentencing of Caleb Jametski, 32, of Metlakatla, who received seven years with four suspended in Ketchikan court on July 7 for distribution of child sexual abuse material. That sentence also carried a 15-year registration requirement. The case opened with a 2024 report from the same national center. Because it involved distribution rather than possession, the two sentences are not directly comparable.

Sentencing ranges also vary substantially by offense and jurisdiction. Under federal law, possession of child pornography carries a maximum of 10 years. Distribution, receipt, attempted receipt or transportation carries a minimum of five years and a maximum of 20, with mandatory sex offender registration upon conviction. In one federal production case, a defendant was sentenced to 360 months and a lifetime term of supervised release.

The dispatch does not name the court, the statute of conviction, or any supervision conditions. It contains no statement from the defendant or a defense attorney. The Department of Public Safety notes that charges reported in its releases are accusations and that defendants are presumed innocent unless proven guilty. The plea resolved the charge.
