Murkowski cosponsors Senate resolution marking Filipino American History Month
Filipino Americans are Alaska's largest non-Indigenous ethnic group, and Sen. Lisa Murkowski is backing a Senate measure that recognizes their history and culture nationwide.
Murkowski has signed on as a cosponsor of S.Res. 931, which would designate October 2026 as Filipino American History Month. Sen. Mazie Hirono, a Hawaii Democrat, introduced the resolution Wednesday, Sept. 30. It has 15 cosponsors. The Senate Committee on the Judiciary received the resolution the same day and has not yet voted on it.
Filipino Americans make up more than half of Alaska's Asian and Pacific Islander population, according to a 2024 local market assessment. About 65 percent of those residents live within the Anchorage municipality, according to the state Department of Labor. Alaska first recognized October as Filipino American History Month in 2023.
